April is the wettest turn of Murchison's year outside October, when storms roll through on more than three weeks out of four and the park empties of almost everyone but the animals that live here.

April asks a lot of your itinerary, with soft tracks and scattered game, and gives back the emptiest park of the year plus a discount on primate permits if Murchison is one stop on a longer Uganda trip.
The numbers behind the year's first wet peak
April averages 215 mm of rain across 24 of the month's 30 days, the highest rain-day count anywhere on the Murchison calendar, with days cooling to 28.8°C. This is the point where the murram game tracks UWA still describes in its own brochure genuinely start to deteriorate, and tall new grass swallows smaller antelope that stood out clearly back in February.
Larger animals do not vanish, they just take more finding: elephant and buffalo still move along the river corridor, and self-drivers should expect the loops off the tarred spine to demand low range, patience and a later start than usual.
One discount worth knowing about
Uganda applies discounted low-season primate tracking permits nationally in April and May, which has nothing to do with Murchison directly but matters if you are pairing this park with chimpanzee tracking at Kibale or gorillas at Bwindi on the same trip, since both fall inside the discount window.
Rooms are not the problem this month, occupancy is. Every lodge in this guide, from the government dormitory at Paraa to the eight bandas at Nile Safari Lodge, stays open through April, and this is realistically the month you could have an entire property to yourself.
The upside most people skip past
Rain this heavy is not only an inconvenience. Newly wet ground draws breeding activity that a dry-season visit misses, and UWA's own material names the Nile delta as a breeding area for saddle-billed stork, a distinction from simply passing through.
Discounted camping rates apply everywhere in the park regardless of season, but April is when a UWA campsite booking is most likely to be the only one anyone has made that week, which suits travellers who came for solitude rather than certainty.
