What a visit to Murchison Falls actually costs

Budget one: self-drive camping, the trip most people take

About $870 for two people over three nights, and here is the arithmetic. Murchison sits alone in UWA's top entrance band, Category A+, so foreign non-residents pay $45 per person for every 24 hours in the park, more than at Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Kidepo, Kibale or Lake Mburo. On top of that comes the vehicle fee: a Ugandan-registered 4x4, the kind you get from a Kampala rental company, pays UGX 40,000 a day including Murchison's own surcharge, about $11 at the September 2026 exchange rate. Bring a foreign-registered vehicle instead and the same 4x4 costs $160 a day, so renting locally is the difference that pays for most of the rest of the trip.

For camping we price the Category B private site at UWA's stated $30 per person per night, booked in advance. There is a cheaper Category C public site with a pit latrine, water and a fireplace, but the tariff prices it only in Ugandan shillings and never states what a foreign visitor actually owes there, so we leave it out of the arithmetic and flag it instead. One more line most people forget: driving yourself around without a UWA guide carries its own $10-per-vehicle daily fee, separate from the entrance and the vehicle charge.

We count three fee days for three nights. The tariff runs each ticket for 24 hours from the hour you enter, not until closing time, so drive in at two in the afternoon and leave before two on your last day and you pay for exactly three days, not four.

Food, drinking water and getting yourself to Kampala in the first place are on top; there is no shop of any size inside the park. Since 1 March 2026 UWA has stopped holding reservations for a week while you decide, so book the campsite and pay in full at the same time through reservations@wildlife.go.ug.

Budget two: a mid-range lodge stay at Murchison River Lodge

About $1,470 for two people over three nights. Murchison River Lodge, on the boundary at Ngwedo in Buliisa district, is one of the few properties here that publishes a full rate card rather than routing everyone to an enquiry form, which is reason enough to name it as the mid-range pick. Chris and Georgie Higginson have run it since the end of 2011, and their thatched safari tents come to $130 per person sharing on full board, the middle of four room types that run from $75 camping tents up to $165 cottages and river cabins.

The lodge sells rooms and meals, not the park itself. Its own notes say that game drives, the boat to the falls and transport are arranged through a local operator rather than run in house, so we keep the same self-drive fee structure as budget one: you still enter on your own Ugandan-registered vehicle and pay the same entrance, vehicle and self-drive game-viewing fees each day.

Two people wanting a room to themselves rather than sharing a rate pay the single supplement: $200 for a cottage or river cabin, $155 for a safari tent, published for both 2026 and 2027. A two-adult, four-child family package on the cottages or tents is $360 regardless of headcount, which is worth knowing if you are not travelling as a couple.

Budget three: fly-in and top-end

About $5,070 for two people over three nights, before flights, built on Nile Safari Lodge downstream of Paraa on the south bank. Eight bandas share thirty-two acres, each with its own deck and an outdoor tub, and the rate covers three courses, house drinks and a sundowner cruise. The 2026 card is only published as images and priced per room, which works out to roughly $780 per person sharing in low season, rising to about $1,290 in the January to February, June to September and late-December peaks. That already makes it several times the next most expensive bed in the landscape, so confirm the exact figure by email before you commit to it.

Two things are genuinely unresolved here. The lodge calls itself part of the national park while UWA's own management plan lists it among facilities adjacent to the boundary, and neither source states whether the daily park vehicle fee applies to the lodge's own transport or is already folded into the rate. We have left that line out of the table rather than guess at it. If you want a fly-in stay with a published price and want to skip the ambiguity, Paraa and Chobe Safari Lodges inside the park quote on request only, and the mobile Murchison Bush Camp is rumoured at around $350 per adult by third parties the operator has not confirmed.

In the January, June to September and late-December peaks the same three nights run to about $8,130 before flights, on the lodge's own high-season rate. No operator publishes a fare for the Entebbe to Bugungu route, so we have not invented one; ask Nile Safari Lodge or a charter broker directly.

The 24-hour ticket, and why the clock matters

A Murchison entrance ticket runs 24 hours from the hour you drive in, not until the gate closes at 19:00 and not until midnight. That is more forgiving than parks that charge by the calendar day: enter at two in the afternoon on day one and you can stay out until two in the afternoon on day four before UWA counts a fourth day, so three nights genuinely costs three days of entry if you time the exit.

Vehicle fees follow a different rule. They are charged per 24 hours too, except for concessionaire vehicles belonging to a lodge that holds a UWA concession inside the park, which pay once per trip rather than once a day. A self-driver camping at a public or private site is not a concessionaire, so the daily vehicle fee applies for every day of the stay regardless of whether the vehicle ever leaves the campsite.

Vehicle fees, and the registration gap

The single biggest cost decision at Murchison has nothing to do with lodges. A foreign-registered tour vehicle or 4WD pays $160 a day, already including the extra $10 Murchison surcharge that applies nowhere else in Uganda. The identical vehicle on Ugandan plates pays UGX 40,000, roughly $11, which is where the vehicle line in every budget above comes from. Renting inside Uganda rather than driving your own vehicle across a border saves you something close to fifteen times the daily cost.

The gap runs across every vehicle class. A foreign-registered saloon pays $50 against UGX 30,000 on Ugandan plates, a minibus or pick-up pays $60 against UGX 40,000, and an overlander pays $160 against UGX 110,000. Even a private boat carries the same split, $100 for a foreign operator against UGX 250,000 for a Ugandan one. Whichever category you fall into, the surcharge and the registration gap are both baked into every figure UWA publishes, so there is nothing extra to add at the gate beyond what the tariff already states.

The fuel maths, dated

GlobalPetrolPrices had Uganda's diesel at UGX 6,647 a litre on 7 September 2026, checked again on 13 September 2026, against a world average of about UGX 6,110. At roughly UGX 3,800 to the dollar that week, on both XE and the same fuel tracker, that is about $1.75 a litre. Petrol was close behind at UGX 6,529.

Our estimate assumes about 960 km of total driving: 305 km from Kampala to the southern gate via Masindi, another 86 km on to Paraa, doubled for the return trip, plus roughly 180 km of game-viewing loops over three days on the Buligi tracks. A loaded diesel 4x4 on a mix of the new tarmac approach roads and murram park tracks burns around 14 litres per 100 km, which is about 134 litres, or roughly $235 at the September 2026 price. Masindi is the last dependable fill on the southern approach, 85 to 105 km short of Paraa, so top up there and carry a reserve.

Paying at the gate

There is no cash option left, whatever an old brochure or blog post still says. UWA's tariff lists mobile money through MTN MoMo Pay and Airtel Money Pay, card machines at the gate, bank transfer and an online portal, and does not mention dollars, pounds or euros in cash at all. Bring a working card and a funded mobile money account as backup.

Since 1 March 2026 the seven-day reservation window has been suspended, so a booking is only secured with full payment at the moment you make it. There is no provisional hold while you finalise dates. Book through reservations@wildlife.go.ug, the toll-free line 0800 100 960 or +256 414 355000, or the Murchison Falls Conservation Area office on +256 414 680 793; UWA's own booking and refund pages were empty when we checked, so email remains the reliable route.

Where the money surprises people

• Murchison sits alone in UWA's top entrance band, Category A+, so entry alone costs more here than at any other Ugandan park on the standard circuit.
• The vehicle fee gap by registration is the single biggest lever you control: about $11 a day on Ugandan plates against $160 a day on foreign plates, a fifteen-fold difference for the same vehicle class.
• The falls launch is quoted at $30 per person, but the boat has an eight-person minimum. Two people chartering it privately are billed the full $120 minimum, not $60.
• Self-driving without a UWA guide carries its own $10-per-vehicle daily fee on top of the vehicle entrance charge, a line that catches people who assume the entrance ticket covers everything.
• Lodges inside the park that hold a UWA concession pay the vehicle fee once per trip. A self-driver camping nearby but re-entering the gate each day pays it every single day instead.
• Cash is gone from the gate entirely: mobile money, card or bank transfer only, no dollars, pounds or euros, regardless of what older guides still print.
• Category C public campsites are priced only in Ugandan shillings on the official tariff, so what a foreign visitor actually owes there is genuinely undefined in the document. Budget for the Category B private site instead, which has a clear dollar rate.
• Since March 2026 there is no holding a booking while you decide. Full payment is due at the moment you reserve, so the fee stack needs to be settled before you commit to dates.
