If you only want the answer
December rewards patience with rapidly improving game viewing, but the Christmas and New Year stretch is priced and booked like nowhere else on the Murchison calendar, so plan around those two weeks specifically.
A fast turn back towards dry
Rain falls to 57 mm over nine days, down from November's 184 mm, while days settle near 29.7°C and nights sit around 19.6°C. The month drops steadily through this transition rather than arriving dry on the first, so early December still carries some of November's softness and late December looks much more like January.
Game viewing improves in step with the drying ground, and by the final week the northern grassland starts to offer the same long sightlines that carry through January and February.
Two very different halves of the same month
The falls launch and the delta cruise run their usual circuits throughout, and from mid-December the delta sits inside UWA's December-to-February shoebill window again, so a downstream trip late in the month is worth the detour. What genuinely separates this month from the rest of the calendar is the fortnight spanning Christmas and New Year, which UWA and every lodge in this guide treat as the single most expensive, most fully booked stretch of the year.
Book that fortnight months ahead, and earlier for the smaller riverside camps than for the fifty-plus rooms on the bluff at Paraa. The first three weeks of December behave more like a normal shoulder month, open at every address in the guide and considerably easier to arrange.
Beyond the two crowded weeks
Outside the Christmas and New Year fortnight, December behaves like a quieter cousin of January, with the same falling rain and the same improving grass, but none of the same price premium. A trip planned for the first three weeks gets most of what late December offers without competing for the same rooms.
December is also a reasonable month to add the south bank to an itinerary built mostly around Buligi: giraffe were only translocated there in 2016 and 2017, so seeing them on both sides of the river in one trip is a fairly recent possibility rather than an old certainty.
