The single wettest month, by the numbers
At 234 mm across 20 days, October carries more rain than any other month in the thirty-year record, edging out even April, while days warm slightly to 29.1°C. UWA calls this the return of the second rains, and the description undersells it: this is Murchison's wet-season peak, not a passing shower month.
Game disperses across the freshly green plains rather than holding to the river, which makes sightings less predictable and often more interesting, since newborn antelope and the birds that follow the rain turn up in numbers a dry-season drive never produces.
Where the pavement helps, and where it does not
The bitumen road running Masindi to Paraa to Buliisa, resurfaced in 2018 and still carrying the trucks supplying the oil works taking shape out towards Buliisa, stays passable through October in a way the murram game tracks off it do not. Self-drivers should build slack into any plan that leaves that main corridor.
Lodging is where October quietly rewards you: every property in the guide is open, demand sits at its lowest of the year alongside November's, and rates and availability both loosen up accordingly.
Two activities the rain cannot touch
Viewing or hiking to the Top of the Falls runs on foot and by vehicle from the main road, largely unaffected by what is happening on the murram game circuits further out, and it stays one of the best half-days in the park whatever the season.
The falls launch itself is the same story: the Nile through Fajao gorge does not thin out in October, and the dense waterbird activity along the banks holds up regardless of how much rain has fallen upstream.
