Murchison Falls in January
January is the driest turn of the dry season proper, when the tall grass of December has burned away and Murchison's animals have nowhere to drink but the river. It is also, by UWA's own reckoning, one of the best months here for birds and one of the quietest for people.
If you only want the answer
January gives you the sharpest game viewing of the year on the Nile and some of the lowest visitor numbers on the calendar, at the cost of heat that barely eases after sunset.
A dry month by the thirty-year numbers
The thirty-year normals put January at 28 mm of rain spread over five days, with days reaching 32.4°C and nights holding at 20.0°C, the mildest of the dry-season lows still ahead of you this year. That balance, more heat than cool, is why UWA's own guidance flags this stretch for early starts: plan your drives for the first and last two hours of daylight and treat the middle of the day as downtime.
With standing water gone from the seasonal pans, Uganda kob, buffalo and giraffe pull towards the Victoria Nile, and the animals that hunt them follow. UWA names January to March as the best run of the year for birds and pairs that claim with a second one worth acting on: visitor numbers are at their lowest through the same three months, so the Buligi tracks you drive this month carry fewer vehicles than almost any other.
The river does not know what month it is
The launch to the base of the falls runs on its normal schedule whatever the season, and so does the quieter cruise down into the delta. January sits inside one of the two dry windows UWA names for shoebill, so the delta run is worth the extra half day if that bird is on your list. Go early, before the heat builds and the wind picks up over the open water.
Lodging follows the same pattern as the river: nearly every address in this guide, from Paraa's terrace above the crossing to Red Chilli's bandas on the south bank, keeps its doors open in January. What changes is demand rather than availability, and the first week or two still carries some of the pricing pressure left over from Christmas and New Year.
