Month by month
Murchison Falls in May
May keeps most of April's rain but starts loosening its grip in the second half, a month better suited to travellers who want Murchison quiet than to anyone chasing a big morning of game.
If you only want the answer
May is still deep in the wet season by the numbers, with rain easing only modestly from April, so treat it as the tail of the low season rather than the start of anything drier.
Coming down off April, slowly
Rainfall drops from April's 215 mm to 146 mm across 21 days, and days settle to 28.3°C, both readings still solidly inside wet-season territory rather than pointing towards June. Grass stays tall through most of the month, tracks stay soft, and the antelope that vanish into cover in April are just as hard to pick out here.
What does change, gradually, is confidence: guides report the roads firming up week by week from the middle of May, so a booking at the end of the month behaves more like early June than like April did.
What still runs, and what to book around
The falls launch and the delta cruise are unaffected by any of this, since both leave from the Paraa jetty and travel on water rather than murram. May sits outside the two dry-season windows UWA names for shoebill, so treat any delta sighting this month as a bonus rather than the plan.
Discounted primate permits still apply nationally through the end of May, the same offer April carries, so anyone combining Murchison with Kibale or Bwindi loses nothing by choosing this month instead. Lodges keep running at the quiet, easy pace that has held since March.
A quieter tract worth asking about
The Heart of Murchison, the newer game tract on the south bank about 20 km east of the Masindi to Paraa road, holds substantial Uganda kob herds and a reputation for lions, and is worth considering in May precisely because fewer people think to ask about it.
Giraffe remain a north-bank speciality even here, so a south-bank-only May itinerary trades away that particular certainty in exchange for quieter tracks and, this month, virtually no other vehicles.
